Skate Shack

Hello Parents and Guardians!

The Royal Oak School Physical Education department is pleased to provide you with the opportunity to join us for an evening of Ice Skating. Please join us on either Tuesday, February 5th or Thursday, February 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Community outdoor rink. We will have skates and helmets available to borrow from the Skate Shack. There will be music, hot chocolate and coffee. We hope to see you there!

Kid Sport Calgary has generously donated the use of their Skate Shack, which is a trailer full of skates! The skate shack will provide us with child, youth and adult skates as well as helmets. You will need to sign out the equipment with one of our volunteers.  All persons on the ice during this time will be required to wear a helmet and the equipment will be available on a “first come, first served basis.” 

All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  School staff will not be supervising this event.  If a child is coming with an adult other than their parent/guardian, they would not be able to participate unless they have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating that another parent/guardian will supervise them for this activity.

We are looking for volunteers to help setting up the music, managing the skate shack (handing out and bringing in the equipment).  Also, assistance is needed attending to the hot beverage area. January 21 - 25

This Week:

We will continue to participate in gymnastics during our Physical Education time.  Please ensure that your child is prepared with clothing that allows for movement and barefoot (no leggings with feet).

Kindergarten registration is ongoing.  If you have a child who was born between January 2014 and February 28, 2015 they are eligible to attend kindergarten in September 2019. Please register your child as soon as possible to guarantee your spot!

Please note that Alberta Education has changed the age eligibility for the 2020-2021 school year.  Beginning for this school year children will need to turn five by December 31st of the year they begin kindergarten.

Letter Learning /i/ 

The letter i has two sounds.  It can be a long vowel sound in words such as ice cream and icicle.  Or a short vowel sound such as igloo, itchy, inchworm, ill, insect and ink.

Last Week:

Students are beginning an exciting new inquiry titled,
"Thinking like an Autobiographer"

During this inquiry, students will create artistic autobiographies to learn what makes them unique and special.  Students are currently in the brainstorming phase, asking themselves,
"What would be in a book about you?"

Learning for this inquiry can be supported at home by talking about the unique and special qualities of your child.

Students continue to explore the various way to make a number line. 

Students are learning how number lines can be represented in various ways.

What is a Blue Day?

Blue Day

Many days in winter are “Blue Days" at Royal Oak School. Blue days are when the weather is too cold or wet for students to be outside. In the winter months, “Blue Days" are considered when it is -20 Degrees Celsius or colder including the wind chill. In the mornings, signs like in the picture are placed at all the entry doors. At 8:55 a.m. teacher supervisors open the doors to let the students in until the last bell at 9:10 a.m. As students enter the building, they sit outside their classroom where they wait for the bell to ring. Only on Blue Days, students can enter any school door to minimize the amount of time they are outside.

Please help us keep the children safe from extreme temperatures and always have the children dress for the weather. As the day progresses and if the temperature warms up, students go outside for recess and lunch break for fresh air and unstructured play times. Students should bring all necessary winter clothing to be outside. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in keeping our kids happy, healthy and warm.

Letter Learning /e/ 

The letter /e/ has two sounds.  The short vowel sound as in elephant, egg, and elm.  The long vowel sound is easily identified as it clearly says its name, in words such as evil and eel.

The uppercase E is a fairly easy letter to form.  Start at the top of the page and make a straight line down.  Jump back up to the top and make a short horizontal line. Jump to the middle of the vertical line and make another short horizontal line.  Finally, move to the bottom of the vertical line and make another short horizontal line.

Writing the lowercase letter /e/ can be tricky.  We begin in the middle of the lower section of the square.  Draw a short line from left to right, then go around like a magic "c".  Often this letter takes a little practice so 5-10 minutes at home 3-4 times a week can be really helpful to develop your child's fine motor skills.
