Running Club

For the month of May, we are pleased to offer our students the opportunity to take part in our Running Club. This club will take place before school and will run on a drop-in basis. No registration required, just show up on the days that you can and run with us. Running Club will meet on the field behind the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:45-9:05am beginning Thursday, May 2nd. We will run for approximately 15 minutes and then stretch. Students will be dismissed from the field at 9:05am to head down to the compound where their class meets for entry. We look forward to seeing you out on the field with us!

Last Week:

We were very lucky to visit Ms. Fournier's hedgehog named Thistle. We learned that hedgehogs are insectivores, meaning it eats insects! We enjoyed watching Thistle eat mealworms.  Thank you to Ms. Fournier's class for letting us visit!

Children have been working towards using their knowledge of letter sounds independently to stretch out words in order to write the phonetic letter sounds that they hear.  Using the sentence starter of "It is a" children are able to hear the big sounds in words.  Beginning sight words such as I, like, see, it, is, a, the are helpful as we begin to take our single word writing into sentences.  We have been talking about how our writing should sound like we speak.  For example, if I say "I like rainbows.  I would have to add an 's' to rainbows instead of just writing "I like rainbow."

While we continue to think like an engineer...the students were asked, "What materials would you use to build a house? Would you use paper, plastic or corks?"

Last Week:

We are exploring the well-known story, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf and constructing meaning from the story by recalling specific events and characters. We have talked about the story and represented the actions of characters portrayed through retelling the story with puppets. While thinking like an engineer we are looking at different materials that could be used to build houses for the three little pigs.

Thanks to the generous donations at our Kindergarten Celebration of Learning we raised over $500 to donate to the YMCA Strong Kids Foundation.  The Rocky Ridge YMCA sent over "Mike" as their representative to accept our cheque.  Way to go Royal Oak School!
We even received a free pass for each student to visit the YMCA which came home with your child this past week.

The Smile Team visited us in class this week.  Students had the chance to learn about what foods are healthy for our teeth and gums as well as how to brush and floss (not the dance) correctly.  Ask your child how many times a day they should brush AND floss. Students brought home some surprises from the dental and orthodontic office.
