October 8 -12

This week we will begin exploring letters, their phonetic sounds and brainstorming words in which we would find these sounds at the beginning.  You can help your child at home by having them teach you the song and poem that we post on our blog, look for pictures in magazines that begin with the sound and have them practice writing the letter using crayons, markers, pencils, chalk or whiteboard markers.  Even making the letters out of play dough is a good fine motor activity.

At school, we always remember to start our letters at the top. Ask your child to sing the song.

Where do you start your letters? At the top. (point up)

Oh, its the top, top, top. (point up and nod head)
Not the bottom, bottom, bottom. (point down and shake head)

C has two sounds.  It can say 'k (hard c)' as in cat or 's' (soft c) as in city.  When we write the letter C we always begin our letter at the top and curve around to the bottom. We call it the "magic c".

Tuesday, Oct. 9th - Book Exchange at the Learning Commons. Please return your library book from last week so you can sign out a new one this week. In order to assist us with knowing if your child returned the book signed out to them we ask that they only bring their books back on library day.  Otherwise we forget which book is ours.

If your child has not yet returned their "Beautiful Stuff" bag please help them complete this task and return it to school right away.

Last Week:

We had our first assembly with our AM classes. Shane Cunningham spoke to students about why we acknowledge the land as a way to honour all the people who walked the land before us.

We continue to practice our pre-printing skills by learning how to draw various lines and shapes including: circles, triangles, squares and crosses. We discovered that if we know how to draw our shapes, we can also draw many other things!

What can you turn your circles into?
In math, we continued sorting items by colour, shape and size and using our math language to describe how we sorted our objects.  You can help your child at home by reviewing sorting items by these attributes.  You can sort items such as buttons, lego, socks, Froot Loops, crayons, small vehicles, pom poms and utensils (think unloading the dishwasher)
** Hint ** It is a great way for them to organize their own toys!
"I sorted these by 2 big, 6 tiny and 5 medium."

"These pom poms are mediums and these are large."

"I ignored the colours and sorted by circles, squares, and triangles."
Can you make a turkey using loose parts?
