Letter Learning /o/

The letter 'o' is a vowel and it has two sounds. The short vowel sound like in 'octopus' and a long vowel sound like in 'ocean'. A good thing to remember is that the letter 'o' begins the same as the magic 'c'.  You begin your letter at the top and curve around then close it up.

Disciplinary Literacy Night / Academic Disciplines
Thinking Like An Artist

Students in Kindergarten have used an artist’s perspective to develop their understanding of identity by exploring the idea that each person is unique. During our Disciplinary Literacy Night, we invited everyone to become an artist and explore this discipline as they explored how to create a realistic self-portrait.

Idea & Intent
Compare the photographs of the artists with their self-portraits, and work to match the artist with their piece of art.

Revise
Realism is trying to represent the world exactly as it appears. Look closely at an apple on the table using a magnifying glass. What colours do you see? Colour the apple using the colours you see.

Explore and Develop
Play Dough: Roll a small ball between your hands,
flattening it with your first finger and thumb and then try rolling it out into a snake.

Use these skills to use the play dough to build a face on the mat.
Remember to think of Mat Man and include all of the necessary body parts.

Can you use these loose parts to create a face?

Use the whiteboard markers and the whiteboards to practice making lines and shapes. Whiteboards are a fantastic tool for students to practice emerging skills as they allow for less permanency.  Students can easily wipe their board when it does not match their vision and try again. Frequent exposure to writing opportunities allows children to experiment and become confident with their writing skills.

Create & Produce
Create your final art piece by drawing a realistic self-portrait on your handout. Using mirrors closely examine your features to draw your own self-portrait. Select the tools that you prefer.
Show & Share
Time to showcase your self-portrait. Show and share your artwork for an audience to view and critique. Find a friend and show them your work. Take a photo of your work in our Royal Oak PhotoBooth.
