Rocks and Rings

Royal Oak School students will have the opportunity to participate in an activity called Egg Farmers Rocks and Rings presented by Curling Canada from November 30th until December 6th, during Physical Education classes. Curling is a fun sport to learn and participate in and aligns well with the Alberta Physical Education Curriculum. The aim of the physical education curriculum is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Curling is one of many activities that individuals may participate in for many years.

This program introduces students to the Olympic sport of curling and features a variety of drills, relays and team-building activities. It is taught using unique indoor floor curling equipment that helps to provide a true curling experience without requiring ice. For more information on this program and to check out some cool videos check out their website at www.rocksandrings.com

The fee for this program is $2.35. Please pay for this through your "PowerSchool" account.

Safety Comes First

Please THINK TWICE before going ON THE ICE

Parents, we have had reports of youth in our community venturing out onto the partially frozen pond.  This is, of course, a safety concern as the pond does not typically freeze consistently enough to safely allow people to access the ice.

We are asking that you please have a discussion with your children about Ice Safety and how to determine when an icy surface is a safe place to play.  An excellent resource (with notes and videos) for this discussion can be found through the Canadian Red Cross website at:

Thank you for keeping our students safe as they explore the community this winter,

Letter Learning /a/

A says /a/ like in ant and apple.  When we write the uppercase letter 'A' we start at the top and slide down and then we go to the top and slide down the other side. Finally, a little line in the middle connects the two big lines.

When we write the lowercase letter 'a' we begin the same as our magic c.  We write the c, go up to the top and straight back down.

Last Week:

We continued to explore patterns using different materials.

"This is cool!  I made an ABC pattern.  See it is blue, purple, red, blue, purple, red."

"This pattern is ABB and this one is AAB.  I can do it both ways 'cuz I'm really good at patterns."

"I made a bunch of AAB patterns!"

"We can make an AB pattern with our bodies! Star, rock, star, rock"

Thinking like an artist in Kindergarten

We continue to love creating using our hands.  Did you know that rolling, squishing and shaping play dough is a great fine motor activity?  When you strengthen your hands and fingers through play you are strengthening them for hard work like drawing and writing. This activity also allows us to practice our manners and share.
"Can you please pass the knife so I can cut my play dough?"

This week one our circle of courage sharing was centred around "What is peace?" This was an opportunity for students to represent their understanding by drawing an action that showed peace, and to share their thoughts with fellow classmates.

"Peace is helping my friends."
"Peace is love."

"Peace is playing."

"Peace is...The wind is blowing in my face."
